* WiW neighbors are invited to join the new Dist 17 email newsgroup
May 30, 2007

The Nashville District 17 newsgroup is a Google Groups public forum dedicated to news, announcements and opinions pertinent to the residents of District 17. Similar electronic bulletin board and email services in other neighborhoods are frequently called “list-serves.” Participants in the Dist. 17 breakfast roundtables have repeatedly called for a system to alert them to important planning, zoning and Metro Council agenda items which they are otherwise not learning about. But the posted announcements can also deal with lost cats and dogs, restaurant openings, political commentary, and other information of timely value to District 17 residents. For a preview of the fledgling Nashville District 17 newsgroup, visit http://groups.google.com/group/nashville-district-17

Historic zoning ignores common sense: City Paper
August 3, 2006

Editorial from The City Paper

In the little, historic South Nashville neighborhood of Woodland-in-Waverly, something is going very, very wrong. The letter-of-the-law is being upheld in the name of historic zoning while common sense and good old fashion right and wrong are not being honored. A court order came down last month demanding 85-year-old widow Margaret Hudson remove the siding from her home because the building sits within a historic zoning overlay prohibiting use of the artificial material.

WiW President John Root calls for end to weddings and special events at the Demonbreun House
July 2006

* WiW President John Root - acting as an individual - not as a WiW officer - has asked the Board of Zoning Approval to immediately revoke the historic home events permit at the Demonbreun House. With his written appeal, John attached photos he took over the fence in the alley of a badminton net in the back yard of the former day care property next door. He said this was being used in conjunction with his wedding and special events business.

Richard Demonbreun said the net was placed up for his 9-year old son and his new 12-year old step daughter before his wedding in the grandfather's yard next door in case the children wanted to play. He said that his wedding guests did not play either badminton or volley ball.

WiWs long range plan from 1986 is still viable today
June 7, 2006

Recently rediscovered is a 20-year-old report of the WiW’s Long Range Planning Committee. The committee identified five major areas of concern:
* Identification of the neighborhood;
* Crime control;
* Lack of public (park) areas;
* Ways to help neighbors upgrade their houses, inparticular…
* Repairing Robincroft (now The Timothy Demonbreun House.)

WiWs planning committee wanted to preserve Robincroft 20 years ago
July 2006
Part 2: The recently rediscovered 20-year-old report of the WiW’s Long Range Planning Committee identified five major areas of concern. One was preserving Robincroft (now The Timothy Demonbreun House) described as “the only structure in our neighborhood which is listed individually on the National Historic Register.” The committee was worried that the house had fallen into disrepair and that the elderly owner was not able to afford the necessary repairs. The committee investigated the possibility of helping to found a non-profit organization such as the Friends of Robincroft to raise the funds necessary to repair Robincroft immediately and to manage the historic home in the future.

Councilman Ronnie Greer finds solution to vinyl siding
July 31, 2006

By Bill Harless, The City Paper, bharless@nashvillecitypaper.com

Louisiana-Pacific Corp. (LP), the building products giant that relocated to Nashville from Oregon in 2004, has offered to strip the vinyl siding off the house that 85-year-old widow Margaret Hudson owns on White Avenue and to replace the siding — at no cost — with a wood-based based product. LP’s offer follows a court order last month demanding Hudson remove the siding from her home, 2208 White Ave., because the building sits within a historic zoning overlay prohibiting use of the artificial material.

But following a meeting last week with Metro Historical Commission Executive Director Ann Roberts, area Metro Councilman Ronnie Greer, who had approached LP, is again tapping his foot with impatience and frustration, being told Hudson must receive Historic Zoning Commission approval to have the LP product installed and being advised Hudson may have to retain the original wood on the home, if it is not overly worn. LP, to install its product, would have to strip off the wood.
